Service: Research & Studies

Save the Children, India, in collaboration with Nokia, is working to address women’s specific needs to leverage gender equity to contribute to better social outcomes and aspirations of young persons (15-24 years).

Objectives:

Development Solutions is supporting the proposed intervention design process through a market assessment study with the following objectives-

  • Understand the scope for livelihoods promotion and development in target geographies with considerations for the difference in opportunities for girls and women;
  • Develop district-specific recommendations for the project intervention

Approach and methodology:

The study was conducted in four States. In each state, one district was chosen for the study. These were Andhra Pradesh (SPSR Nellore district), Rajasthan (Dungarpur district), Assam (Dhemaji district), and Maharashtra (Nashik district).   A mixed methodology was adopted for the study. The quantitative and qualitative tools for the study were developed based on insights from the secondary review and interactions with Save the Children core and state teams. In-depth primary data collection from industry and community stakeholders was done. For quantitative sampling, a sample size of 450 respondents was taken (from 40 villages). A mapping and household listing operation was carried out in each of the sampled villages, with support from the Save the Children state teams. The household selection was made independently for each respondent group. Qualitative sample selection was purposive and was based on interactions with state teams and secondary review.

Government officials at various levels, industry stakeholders, skill development institutes were interviewed to understand the existing trends, potential opportunities, and gaps in the sector and industry. The interactions were also used to assess government livelihood enhancement schemes, policies, and other social entitlements that could be leveraged to benefit target communities. Focus group discussions and in-depth interviews with the community and SHGs were also conducted to develop and understand the livelihood issues of the communities, their perspective, aspirations, existing skillset, gaps, and challenges.

Results:

The assignment will design the most viable livelihood and economic options for the targeted community and leverage digital technologies for influencing the social, economic, and ecological well-being of target communities as the overarching goal. The program envisaged integration and optimum utilization of existing resources and the digital infrastructure to strengthen the six pillars of development, i.e., education, livelihoods, governance, financial inclusion, healthcare, and entertainment, to achieve the envisioned goal. The key insights and recommendations would be used to develop a policy brief in consultation with Save the Children.
